Diabetes | How Yoga can help you

Diabetes a polygenic disease characterized by abnormally high glucose levels in the blood; any of several metabolic disorders marked by excessive urination and persistent thirst. Uncontrolled diabetes comprises of having high sugar levels and results in many complications which lead to organ failure (eyes, heart, blood vessels, kidney and feet), and increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease; overweight, high level of cholesterol and high blood pressure commenced to diabetes risk factors. Diabetes is a chronic condition which is fast becoming an epidemic; to control sugar levels naturally one needs to make modifications in ones dietary habits and lifestyle, this will go a long way towards restoring health.

The condition  diabetes  is when the body exhibits a reduced ability to remove glucose from the blood into its cells after eating and drinking which contain carbohydrates. Carbohydrates (an essential structural component of living cells and source of energy for animals; includes simple sugars with small molecules as well as macromolecular substances) are classified, according to the number of monosaccharide groups they contain. The complex sugars that are broken down into simple forms known as glucose which is released into the bloodstream for energy or for storage to facilitate later.

The Pancreas produces a hormone called insulin which regulates blood sugar level; blood sugar level rises to toxic levels if insulin is insufficient and creates problems, excessive insulin leads to hypoglycaemia which can be fatal unless controlled. Diabetes is a chronical health condition and as often referred to as the silent killer; body shows a reduced ability to remove glucose from the blood of that into its cells after eating and drinking anything which contains carbohydrates is known as hyperglycaemia (very high blood sugar) and elevated blood glucose level.

The food one consumes is converted into glucose which revives the cells within the body, while excess glucose stored in the form of fats in the body. Insulin is a hormone which controls the cell to take up glucose from the blood which is produced by the pancreas that helps in regulating blood sugar levels, and if glucose is not secreted in proper quantities, the sugar level in the blood rises which triggers off many adverse effects upon the organs of the body. The timing and amount of hormones released in the pancreas are dependent entirely on feedback mechanisms in the body.

The food material taken in all through the process of nutrition is used in cells to provide energy for various life processes. The carbohydrates are used to supply energy to the body whereas the fat is used to facilitate brain health, so food is broken down into micro and macronutrients which in turn are used in different parts of the body’s organs for various assigned activity. Insulin turns sugar into energy; the balance between energy and insulin is to provide good health.

Spleen produces antibodies to protect the body from certain diseases; and, it is located on the left side of the body on the top of the abdominal cavity, and is a soft oval-shaped organ. The spleen lies in direct contact with the pancreases, also has a function to remove worn-out red and white blood cells and further breaks down haemoglobin as well as acting as a reservoir for iron in the body. The spleen produces all sorts of blood cells in case of any injuries that happen in the body.

Symptoms: Frequent urination, blurry vision, excessive thirst, fatigues, tingling sensation in the hand and foot, and wounds which takes more time to recover.

Types of diabetes: there are three kinds of diabetes; type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, Type 1- the body does not produce insulin and immune system attacks and destroy the cells in the pancreas which secrete insulin. Type 2: the body does not make or use insulin well. Type-2 diabetes has some form of mineral deficiency as previous studies have proved. Foods rich in minerals include leafy vegetables such as collard green, kale, broccoli, and chard are beneficial to include others are unprocessed grains, nuts, peas, seed and beans.

Gestational diabetes- occurs during pregnancy (12%-14% of pregnant woman develop gestational diabetes and usually occurs around 24th to 28th week of pregnancy). Excess weight is the main cause of diabetes that chances of developing type 2.

Research shows that exercise and a healthy diet that includes are high in fibre, saturated fats can help in preventing diabetes. Consume dry fruits, nuts and seeds to check mineral deficiencies; increase fibre intake and have herbs and seeds (fenugreek seeds, amla, kalonji (nigella), cinnamon, turmeric, karela and raw onions; are beneficial for diabetics and prevented. Exercise improves the body’s insulin resistance and helps to gain additional health benefits.

A healthy life sans diabetes is possible; if one is prepared to put in some effort; a person can recover from diabetes. Doing Exercise every day is the key of the health to long-lasting health benefits; at least forty-five minutes of exercise a day is enough to stay healthy, you can do the warming-up exercises; along with walking and running, yoga, meditation and aerobic exercises, which are enough sustaining good health to obtain longevity. Exercise and physical activity in a day intensifies happy hormones (dopamine, serotonin and endorphins); and decreasing stress hormone promptly.
